Douglas Cleverdon bookshop sign

by Eric Gill · design · 1926

Gill painted a fascia sign in sans-serif capitals for Douglas Cleverdon's bookshop at 18 Charlotte Street, Bristol, in 1926. Gill also sketched an alphabet for Cleverdon to use for future shop notices and labels. Stanley Morison of Monotype Corporation saw the painted sign in 1927 and commissioned Gill to develop the lettering into a full typeface, which became Gill Sans, released by Monotype in 1928.
