dre brought in keyboardist colin wolfe, veteran west coast dj chris taylor (the glove), and engineer greg royal after leaving ruthless in 1991. they set up at death row studios, bought from solar records with $1.5 million from drug dealer michael harris, then mixed at larrabee sound.[04][08][11]

wolfe played hard-hitting synthesizer solos and bass, helped write songs, and told wax poetics in 2014 they aimed to make a parliament-funkadelic album. sessions took place at dre's calabasas mansion and solar studios, with snoop, the d.o.c., daz, kurupt, nate dogg, and jewell writing and recording together in what dre called the death row inmates.[04][03][09]

taylor mixed the record with dre and co-produced stranded on death row, though he says he never received credit for the track and mixed more of snoop's doggystyle than the chronic. guitarist chris clairmont, keyboardist justin reinhardt, flutist katisse buckingham, and guitarist eric borders played on sessions.[11][09]

interscope negotiated a $10 million deal in 1992 to finance and distribute death row after john mcclain met dre while he recorded the chronic. sony had passed on the album due to death row's controversial nature and dre's contractual status with ruthless.[03]

iovine agreed to release it through a complicated distribution agreement with priority records, dre's label as a member of n.w.a. the chronic was released december 15, 1992 through death row and interscope, distributed by priority.[03]

in january 2023, as part of a deal with universal music group and shamrock holdings for his music assets, the masters transferred from death row back to dre through his company ary, inc., then to umg. the deal was reportedly worth upwards of $200 million, and the chronic returned to streaming february 1, 2023 via interscope.[03][01][02]

warren g, dre's stepbrother, introduced snoop dogg to dre by giving him a cassette tape with snoop's early solo freestyle. snoop auditioned in 1991 and signed with death row, then dominated vocal performances across the chronic at age 20.[10][06]

the d.o.c., dre's friend and former n.w.a lyricist, was retained for songwriting and coached the death row inmates on how to write sixteen-bar verses on legal pads. chris taylor told grammy.com the d.o.c. would say write sixteen lines and when you get to sixteen lines, you're done.[05][06]

the chronic expanded on the production of n.w.a's niggaz4life, dre's first experiments with g-funk, with new sparse beats and reduced use of samples.[07]
