See-Line Woman
by Nina Simone · music · 1964
simone recorded it in 1964 as the b-side to mississippi goddam, released on philips and produced by hal mooney. the single label credits george houston bass with the writing and simone with the arrangement, though bass was langston hughes' secretary at the time and hughes suggested the song directly in a letter. the track samples sea lion woman (1939) by christine & katherine shipp, a 1930s field recording from mississippi that simone retitled and rearranged with syncopated handclaps and percussion.
