bergman wrote and shot this in 1965 after a hospitalization derailed a prior actress project, casting bibi andersson and liv ullmann based on their physical resemblance. cinematographer sven nykvist and bergman eliminated medium shots entirely, building the film from extreme close-ups and wide angles, a formal constraint that became known as the nykvist style. andersson rewrote and defended the beach monologue when producers wanted it cut from the script.
