south korean black comedy thriller directed by bong joon-ho, co-written with han jin-won, shot may to september 2018 with cinematographer hong kyung-pyo. the park family house was built as a complete set in jeonju from a floor plan bong sketched during scriptwriting, with production designer lee ha jun working from a sketchup 3d model bong created that included character blocking. bong drew on his experience as a tutor for a wealthy family in his twenties and cited kim ki-young's the housemaid (1960) and kurosawa's high and low as reference points for the film's vertical class structure.
