nintendo released the gamecube in japan on september 14, 2001, followed by north america on november 18, 2001. nintendo partnered with artx for the gpu and ibm for the cpu, a 32-bit powerpc-based processor called gekko running at 486 mhz. the console used proprietary minidvd discs with 1.5gb of storage, making it incapable of playing audio cds or video dvds unlike the playstation 2 and xbox.

    Wei Yen, who had led SGI's work scaling supercomputer designs into the N64's graphics pipeline, founded ArtX in 1997 with twenty former SGI engineers. Nintendo contracted ArtX in May 1998 to design the GameCube's system logic and graphics processor, Flipper, carrying forward the institutional knowledge from N64 development into the next generation.
