Moonlight
by Barry Jenkins · film · 2016
Moonlight is a coming-of-age drama written and directed by Barry Jenkins, adapted from Tarell Alvin McCraney's unpublished play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. Jenkins wrote the screenplay in ten days and shot the film in 25 days on location in Miami's Liberty City, where both he and McCraney grew up, forgoing tax incentives to maintain authenticity. Composer Nicholas Britell applied the chopped and screwed technique from hip hop to the orchestral score, and cinematographer James Laxton referenced photographers Henry Roy and Earlie Hudnall Jr. for the film's saturated, blown-out color palette.
