by George Stevens · film · 1956

stevens adapted edna ferber's 1952 novel for warner bros, shooting exteriors in marfa, texas with a reata ranch facade that cost $100,000 to build at warner burbank. the film spent an entire year in the editing room, with stevens spending two years in preparation, a year of filming and another year of post-production. after james dean's death late in production, nick adams overdubbed some of dean's lines, which were nearly inaudible.
