the album came out of the lab synthèse scene, a 4600 square foot mile end loft space co-founded by sebastian cowan in 2007 where montreal diy artists performed and lived. police shut down lab synthèse, and cowan began managing the artists who had played there, forming arbutus records in 2009 to release their work.[04]

arbutus records retained all rights to the recording. when the label announced reissues years later, grimes made public via her tumblr that she had no rights to her own recordings and would receive no money from the reissues, only arbutus would benefit.[04]

sebastian cowan, who founded arbutus and had co-founded lab synthèse, mastered the album and became her manager. devon welsh of majical cloudz and a producer called flow child taught boucher the basics of music production software in the lab synthèse space, showing her how to use the tools she would employ on geidi primes.[05]
