Futura

by Paul Renner · design · 1927

futura is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by paul renner between 1924 and 1926, released commercially in 1927 by the bauer type foundry. renner combined the proportions of roman capitals with elementary geometry, but the design incorporates subtle optical corrections, such as slightly oval round forms, to achieve visual balance. the bauer manufacturing team played an important role in adapting the design for different sizes of text.

futura was developed in direct competition with erbar, which had been released in 1926 by ludwig & mayer, a year before futura's 1927 release. renner expressed disappointment that the slower design and release process allowed erbar to precede his design and establish the geometric sans serif category first.

It was developed as a typeface by Bauersche Gießerei, in competition with Ludwig & Mayer's seminal Erbar typeface.
