the film was the idea of teddy mccook and eddie knight, owners of kingston nightclub the bronco, where gardiner's group the boris gardiner happening was the house band. mccook and knight met with calvin lockhart to make the film and approached gardiner to write the music with his brother. the soundtrack went unreleased officially after 1974 until jazzman records reissued it in 2010. in 2015 the title track was sampled on kendrick lamar's "wesley's theory" from to pimp a butterfly.
