by William Caslon · design · 1734

caslon is a serif typeface cut by william caslon, a london gun engraver turned punchcutter, and first publicly shown in a specimen sheet in 1734. caslon worked for printer william bowyer starting in 1722, cutting roman and italic punches based on dutch baroque types that had dominated english printing, and by 1730 had loans enough to set up his own foundry on ironmonger row. the 1734 specimen showed 14 sizes and ended english dependence on dutch imports.
