BitKeeper

by Larry McVoy · software · 2000

BitKeeper is a proprietary distributed version control system that was developed by BitMover, a company founded by Larry McVoy in 2000. while McVoy worked at Sun, he worked on a peer-to-peer SCM system named TeamWare that would form the basis of his later BitKeeper product. BitMover published BitKeeper, a proprietary version control system, which offered a community version that was free for open-source developers, and in 2002, the Linux kernel development team adopted BitKeeper. in april 2005, BitMover announced that it would stop providing a version of BitKeeper free of charge to the community, giving as the reason the efforts of Andrew Tridgell, which led to the revocation of the free BitKeeper license for the Linux kernel project and forced Linus Torvalds to write git.
