kubrick co-wrote the screenplay with arthur c. clarke, developed alongside clarke's novel and loosely based on clarke's 1948 short story "the sentinel." the film was shot in super panavision 70 at mgm-british studios in borehamwood and shepperton studios, and included a 30-ton centrifuge built by an aerospace company and douglas trumbull's slit-scan machine, which ran 24 hours a day for months to produce the stargate sequence. the screenplay draws from clarke's "the sentinel" written in 1948 for a bbc competition and first published in 1951.
